FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER GROWTH ARC:

NAKAJIMA YOUKO FROM TWELVE KINGDOMS

Youko from Twelve Kingdoms has a painful journey. It’s difficult to watch sometimes. Her emotion is so raw, and she starts out rather unlikable. She’s almost uncomfortably human, insecure and prone to reacting in an immature manner. She’s a pushover and she lets people walk all over her. She’s not lead character material, because she’s plainly a bit pathetic.

That’s the point though.

Youko goes through the best character arc I’ve ever seen in any anime/manga and one of the best I’ve seen in any form of media period. Yes, she becomes badass, tough as nails, kind, compassionate, and strong-hearted. But this is all totally believable. Youko faces all of her flaws, all her fears, and she suffers. And it HURTS to watch, it really does. Because it is just so real, and the series digs so deep into her heart and mind that you feel what she’s feeling and that you grow with her as she faces her greatest demons and matures into not only a wonderful girl, but an amazing leader. 

To add to that Youko isn’t the only female character with an awesome character arc in the series. The third arc of the anime in fact features TWO other amazing lady arcs; Shoukei, the disgraced princess of Hou, and Suzu, a servant girl suffering from abuse.
